TONKA TOBAC // Hal of Hove's All Natural Perfume

As the heady heights of Valentine's simmers down, there is a scent that continues to linger in my memory...

Now I know it's fairly unusual, but whilst most are more attuned to florals, citrus and sweet notes, I prefer much darker, more masculine scents such as Amber, Tobacco, Sandalwood & Vanilla.

I've chosen Tonka Tobac, by House of Hal. The deep multifaceted scent from the Tonka is in akin to the more grown up version of Vanilla. There's a rich, lingering depth to it which narrowly escapes sickly sweet. And then comes the smoke, from the Tobacco Leaf - not a dwindling ember from a long forgotten fire, but instead a complimentary, powdery scent more reminiscent of Chanel no. 5 - which my mother wears thanks to the Bergamot notes.

House of Hal's dedication to the purest of soil accredited essential oils stands the test of time, with only one spritz to the decollage and a dab from there to the wrist, ensuring the heady scent lingers all day without stepping into granny territory. She believes in common sense chemistry, furiously researching the best alternatives from ancient days of yore to brand new discoveries.

A soon-to-be favourite scent, for my oh-so snobby nose - rest assured a 10ml bottle for a mere £7, is not going to last long at all.

TIME TO REJOICE // Antipodes Rejoice Light Facial Day Cream

I have always been drawn to this interestingly disheveled, pushed and pressed little aluminium tube when in my nearest and dearest Health Food Shop, Infinity Foods and now I finally have one of my own of the cult hit facial creams, Rejoice by Antipodes.

Now if you're not a marzipan fan, look away now, this bad boy has a heavenly scent of almonds that I just relish. And there's no getting away from that fact, it's the only scent there is to this.

It also is as light as a feather to apply, without copping out on moisturisation. My everyday moisturiser used to be, 'Celestial' by Lush for years, but I found that product sat on top of my skin, causing a slightly greasy feel and sometimes creasing with my make up.

But there's none of that fussing with Antipodes, which seeps in quickly and feels nourishing to the skin. Manuka Flower oil, which is super restorative, is one of the main ingredients as is the fatty goodness of avocado oil equalling it totally replenishing to the skin.

I like that Antipodes is totally upfront about its organic ingredients where possible and has considered it's packaging to be environmentally aware (no plastics/just biodegradable cardboard) & has made a devilishly decadent, yet light, moisturiser good enough for everyday.

FAKING IT // Pure Rice Powder Bronzer, Ere Perez

With the dappling of glorious (& rare) sunshine over here in the UK at the moment - a touch of bronzer to the face & neck is the perfect cheat to a decent glow-y and safe sun kissed look.

I recently purchased Ere Perez's Pure Rice Bronzer from Naturismo (kinda like the Green answer to Amazon) & have been super impressed.

Beautifully simple, handwritten clean branding, with safe and pure ingredients listing and - much to my delight - a clear stance on anti-toxic ingredients in their products, dedicated to caring of the environment & people (no child labour, organic, pure ingredients full of natural properties & a gentle nod to recycling on the back) with a long list of free from's on the packet and website.

A couple for that Free From List include Parabens (A estrogen-mimicking chemical with potential links to Breast Cancer) Phythalates (another known hormonal disrupter, causing reproductive issues & a cancer concern) & Mineral Oil / Petroleum (For the EU it's good news, Petroleum used in products must be a proven non-carcigen, but for elsewhere the close link between PAH contamination & petroleum is a known cancer developer).

With the bronzer itself, my only slight hunch is the container itself feeling potentially a little plasticky - reminiscent of my childhood Polly Pockets, in size and feel in the palm of my hand. (90s child..)

But the product itself - is not too heavy, crumbly, dark, cakey or clingy - it's lightweight touch when swept across the skin using a wide powder brush adds a finishing, easy to build, bronzed look, with no weird glittery particles making me feel like I've raided the Christmas cupboard.

Plus it's cruelty free and vegan.

GETTING TO GRIPS WITH SERUMS // S5 Skincare Review

Recently I’ve managed to get my hands on the Replenish & Renew Serum from the S5 Skincare Range. Their carefully considered packaging gets back down to the basics of glass and paper, whilst remaining sleek in it’s design. These two sumptuous serums come in an extremely satisfying lab-style glass bottle with adjoining glass pipette stored separately to the bottle.

For me, one of the most impressive things for me about S5 Skincare is their clarity in their ingredients listing. The Replenish serum boasts 100% natural ingredients, 30% being organic, making me feel like I’m putting on a high calibre, pure product on my skin to get the best version of what it really needs.

If I’m going to be honest I’ve struggled with facial serums so far. As a personal preference, serums feel like they sit more on top of the face rather than penetrate in the deeper dermis like a fatty, thick cream seems to.

But I’ve been using the Replenish & Restore Serums as a night treatment to aid dryness during those recuperating twilight hours. Both feel quite different to one another - Replenish feeling more like a liquid oil; thinner in it’s consistency with a little going a long way. Whilst Renew is slightly thicker, more like a traditional cream form. Both smell absolutely divine and are a real treat to an end of day cleansing routine before bed.

If serums are your thing over creams, I would certainly recommend.

WINTER SKIN RESCUE // AS Apothecary

A couple of weeks back on a really frosty Winter’s Night I was invited to the AS Apothecary shop opening in Lewes, Sussex.

I had been admiring AS Apothecary lovingly from afar for some time now, but turns out we had a mutual friend! So it was a pleasure to be there in person to introduce myself - mostly by basically fangirling over Amanda’s encyclopedic knowledge of plants and herbal remedies for all sorts of ailments.
..Infact, I was so
caught up in conversation that I was definitely, embarrassingly the last person to leave the gorgeous shop that night!

I left with a couple of goodies, which I’m featuring this week as my Winter Skin Rescue secret formula. Both are oil based, rich in nutrients and filled to the brim with nothing but goodness!

I’m personally a bit freaked out by oils on the face; mostly down to my fine hair which deems itself greasy within breathing distance of any oil residue. So I’ve kept the Facial Serum & Cleansing Oil to an end of day routine, and with all these Christmas Do’s this time of year, the make up has been heavy on the eyes and the nights have been late!

Nothing is too much of a match for this beautiful Cleansing Oil - it’s a joy to squeeze out from the pipette into my palm like science labcoat technician - but it is a very odd feeling rubbing a waterproof oil into my face to reveal nothing but a charcoal smear from my eyes to my chin.

There’s a slight panic on first use as I catch myself in the mirror - it forms a sort of barrier as it lifts the make up - & I’m thinking there’s no way this will all come off without residue. But it’s the exact opposite to my expectations - every, last, scrap of makeup comes off when combined with a steaming hot face cloth, and absolutely no residue is left on the face. There’s no dry-ness, itching or stinging - the end result is a soft, clean skin which feels nourished and bouncy.

The Facial Serum, Amanda proceeds to tell me, is full of some of their best and finest ingredients. From Rosehip Oil to Jojoba Oil - a free radical preventative, rich in antioxidants and full of Vitamin E for gorgeous clear skin. It’s intensely rich, smells divine and is best left to settle into the skin as an overnight serum.

AS Apothecary is unashamedly transparent about their slow, meditative process and approach to gathering by hand by respecting wildlife that's the intrinsic core to their making process. They use small batch methods, recycle and reduce waste where possible, use local and organic produce from East Sussex and even grow their wildflower ingredients themselves.

MIRACLE MELT // Evolve Organic Beauty's Gentle Cleansing Melt

Where do I start? Evolve, for me, literally ticks all the boxes.
Based in Hertfordshire, I'm all about supporting a local British brand – especially when all Evolve's products are vegan and cruelty free.

I've tried all three of the cleansers in their collection, with my highest recommendation being the Baobab & Vanilla Gentle Cleansing Melt. It emulsifies on application with water; literally melting away eye make up with no stinging to the eyes or heavy balmy residue left on the skin. It's semi-transparent, gooey mixture smells of sweet vanilla goodness - without being sickly or overpowering.

I've been doubling-up my cleanse by following it with the fruity, apricot scent of their Fresh Face Wash; a light foaming gel which is moisturising to the skin, non-stinging to the eye and holds a scent that quickly had me reminiscing childhood summer days on the beach. If you're into toners, the Liquid Crystal 2-in-1 Micellar Cleanser, with a stunning rosewater scent and non-oily consistency, works for a quick once over on a cotton pad.

Visually - it's exactly what I want to see from a skincare company; brown protective glass to shelter their all natural, organic ingredients from potentially damaging UV rays. A clear font with all the information you need, summarised on the matte-waterproof labelling (handy!) including non-waffle-y directions on how to use, as well as a personal nod to their hand-crafted ethos with the maker labelled directly on the product – love!

With their hand-crafted, small-batch methods using solely organic ingredients it feels like Evolve are taking the time to deliver a considered and more refined product - bucking the norm of harmful “filler ingredients” to deliver a gorgeous product with an equally stunning ethos.

HONEST HANDS // Bergamot & Rosemary Handwash, HONEST Skincare

I’m a mega fan of Katie’s. With a background in holistic apothecary she’s translated her knowledge of nature’s healing potentials into one of the most stylish and beautifully designed skincare brands out there.

For me it ticks all the boxes; Honest prioritises using the very best in pure ingredients that are safe to use on the body as well as being environmentally aware, through packaging that is recyclable with minimal waste in the studio.

Using the Bergamot & Rosemary Hand Wash leaves no residue - only a clean, balancing feel that doesn't dry my skin out. I chose the Bergamot & Rosemary fragrance from Workshop for it’s warmth and familiarity during the chilly Winter months. Plus its classic glass brown bottle container means I can keep the bottle to re-use for the future.
