TONKA TOBAC // Hal of Hove's All Natural Perfume

As the heady heights of Valentine's simmers down, there is a scent that continues to linger in my memory...

Now I know it's fairly unusual, but whilst most are more attuned to florals, citrus and sweet notes, I prefer much darker, more masculine scents such as Amber, Tobacco, Sandalwood & Vanilla.

I've chosen Tonka Tobac, by House of Hal. The deep multifaceted scent from the Tonka is in akin to the more grown up version of Vanilla. There's a rich, lingering depth to it which narrowly escapes sickly sweet. And then comes the smoke, from the Tobacco Leaf - not a dwindling ember from a long forgotten fire, but instead a complimentary, powdery scent more reminiscent of Chanel no. 5 - which my mother wears thanks to the Bergamot notes.

House of Hal's dedication to the purest of soil accredited essential oils stands the test of time, with only one spritz to the decollage and a dab from there to the wrist, ensuring the heady scent lingers all day without stepping into granny territory. She believes in common sense chemistry, furiously researching the best alternatives from ancient days of yore to brand new discoveries.

A soon-to-be favourite scent, for my oh-so snobby nose - rest assured a 10ml bottle for a mere £7, is not going to last long at all.

SWITCH IT UP // This Is A Texturizing Dust by Davines VS Super Dust by L'oreal

In the words of my hairdressers, past and present:

"Girl got fine hair, but girl got a lot of it..."

So, from time to time, girl gotta get a little help.

Five years ago, a hairdresser friend of mine popped L'oreal's Super Dust into my hen do goodie bag, as part of my box of tricks for Wedding Day hair.

Before then, I'd never seen or heard of these sticky little minxes; a funny dry powder dust that sticks, clumps and volumises the hair particles. So I've used it for every big event or night out since.

However, use with these little guys with caution. If you ever accidentally breathe one of those minuscule dry powder particles in, BOY do you know about it. That lovely sticky, clumpy magical thing it does to your fine tresses? Also happens right into the back of your throat, and you'll most certainly end up eye-wateringly coughing and spluttering up your entire evenings make up efforts.. classy.

So I did a straight swap.

I have noticed a significant difference to my panicked dusting, holding my breath episodes and shoving all over since switching up from L'oreal Super Dust to Eco Brand, Davines This is a Texturizing Dust.

And whilst Davines could work a little harder to confirm to us general public whether or not they are an entirely Cruelty Free Brand, it settles me more knowing I'm opting for a brand which cares significantly about the planet, from their 100% Clean Energy Production Guarantee  to their programmes promoting Zero Impact Salons

BIG HAIR DON'T CARE // @loveyohair (Cuttlefish Eco Hair Salon)

Got my hurrr did my a special babe & fellow Eco Warrior
(we're cool with that term)
called Yo last Saturday.

Yo decided we both had the same kind of hair;
fine and limp but lots of it!

So we beefed it up with a plethora of gorgeous products from Eco-Friendly, Sustainable Beauty Brand Davines; in particular the Sea Salt Spray, Dry Texturiser & Texturising Dust. All of which I shall be filling my hair styling drawer with promptly.

The result?

Big, Beachy, Lioness tresses.

I was super chuffed.

GETTING TO GRIPS WITH SERUMS // S5 Skincare Review

Recently I’ve managed to get my hands on the Replenish & Renew Serum from the S5 Skincare Range. Their carefully considered packaging gets back down to the basics of glass and paper, whilst remaining sleek in it’s design. These two sumptuous serums come in an extremely satisfying lab-style glass bottle with adjoining glass pipette stored separately to the bottle.

For me, one of the most impressive things for me about S5 Skincare is their clarity in their ingredients listing. The Replenish serum boasts 100% natural ingredients, 30% being organic, making me feel like I’m putting on a high calibre, pure product on my skin to get the best version of what it really needs.

If I’m going to be honest I’ve struggled with facial serums so far. As a personal preference, serums feel like they sit more on top of the face rather than penetrate in the deeper dermis like a fatty, thick cream seems to.

But I’ve been using the Replenish & Restore Serums as a night treatment to aid dryness during those recuperating twilight hours. Both feel quite different to one another - Replenish feeling more like a liquid oil; thinner in it’s consistency with a little going a long way. Whilst Renew is slightly thicker, more like a traditional cream form. Both smell absolutely divine and are a real treat to an end of day cleansing routine before bed.

If serums are your thing over creams, I would certainly recommend.

WINTER SKIN RESCUE // AS Apothecary

A couple of weeks back on a really frosty Winter’s Night I was invited to the AS Apothecary shop opening in Lewes, Sussex.

I had been admiring AS Apothecary lovingly from afar for some time now, but turns out we had a mutual friend! So it was a pleasure to be there in person to introduce myself - mostly by basically fangirling over Amanda’s encyclopedic knowledge of plants and herbal remedies for all sorts of ailments.
..Infact, I was so
caught up in conversation that I was definitely, embarrassingly the last person to leave the gorgeous shop that night!

I left with a couple of goodies, which I’m featuring this week as my Winter Skin Rescue secret formula. Both are oil based, rich in nutrients and filled to the brim with nothing but goodness!

I’m personally a bit freaked out by oils on the face; mostly down to my fine hair which deems itself greasy within breathing distance of any oil residue. So I’ve kept the Facial Serum & Cleansing Oil to an end of day routine, and with all these Christmas Do’s this time of year, the make up has been heavy on the eyes and the nights have been late!

Nothing is too much of a match for this beautiful Cleansing Oil - it’s a joy to squeeze out from the pipette into my palm like science labcoat technician - but it is a very odd feeling rubbing a waterproof oil into my face to reveal nothing but a charcoal smear from my eyes to my chin.

There’s a slight panic on first use as I catch myself in the mirror - it forms a sort of barrier as it lifts the make up - & I’m thinking there’s no way this will all come off without residue. But it’s the exact opposite to my expectations - every, last, scrap of makeup comes off when combined with a steaming hot face cloth, and absolutely no residue is left on the face. There’s no dry-ness, itching or stinging - the end result is a soft, clean skin which feels nourished and bouncy.

The Facial Serum, Amanda proceeds to tell me, is full of some of their best and finest ingredients. From Rosehip Oil to Jojoba Oil - a free radical preventative, rich in antioxidants and full of Vitamin E for gorgeous clear skin. It’s intensely rich, smells divine and is best left to settle into the skin as an overnight serum.

AS Apothecary is unashamedly transparent about their slow, meditative process and approach to gathering by hand by respecting wildlife that's the intrinsic core to their making process. They use small batch methods, recycle and reduce waste where possible, use local and organic produce from East Sussex and even grow their wildflower ingredients themselves.

A* FOR AXIOLOGY // Vegan Lipstick

Let me introduce to you one of the fanciest and snazziest designed lipsticks that I have come across to date; Axiology.

Before we’ve even come to unfurl the deep-rust red lipstick, we have the exterior packaging to contend with. In all it’s unusual triangular glory, complete with an embossed modern branding.

A rough textured paper alludes straight away to the idea that it’s probably from a recycled source (nothing new there). Until you hear that said recycled source has been hand collected from a woman’s-only enterprise, specialising in recycling all manner of paper materials from hotels and litter all across the island of Bali, by means of tackling the environmental impact litter has on the island.

Wow.

And then there’s the capsule - a simple yet beautiful - golden matte, metal case, which reveals its contents not by swiveling the lipstick in the traditional sense - no, no, no, - but instead by pushing the bottom of the lipstick to release the interior.
A design delight!

I picked this Autumnal Orangey Red - in Elusive) - as a perfect pair to golden adornments for the festive period.

Initially I mistook it for a matte-finish lipstick - just a personal preference with darker shades - but it glided on with a subtle sheen thanks to the oodles of nourishment in their organic oils. Avocado Oil (pollutant protecting), Coconut Oil (antifungal) & Castor Seed Oil (moisturising) all enrich this lipstick to protect and nourish and there is a deep, wintery scent that lingers from the Orange Essential Oils within. On an application note; due to the sheer finish, reapplication and liner is needed to prevent bleeding!

This is a luxe product which is reflected in the price (£22.50) which I found from Naturismo, so you are really buying into Axiology’s ethos here, but I justified it as a Christmas present to myself..
with all that present shopping I’ve been doing for others..

TALC-FREE TRESSES // Organic Dry Shampoo Powder by Corinne Taylor

There is a new essential to add to my ever increasing box of magic tricks in the beauty cabinet and that is an Organic Dry Shampoo Powder from Corinne Taylor.

Handmade in Brighton, I was happy to support a local via this particular Dry Shampoo; but it needed to be hassle free & tick all the boxes before I invested in it as a regular.

So, what was on my 'no fuss' list for this Dry Shampoo to stand up to the task?

Well, it had to smell delicious - which it does; a zesty, lemony freshness that comes from the Organic Grapefruit essential oil within it. There's also a summery background scent, which smells like an English Rose Garden – very feminine and takes it up a notch from feeling like an everyday item to feeling a little more luxe.

Secondly, it was also important that it didn't clump or clog up in a white, grainy texture on the scalp once applied to my hair. And I found this Organic Dry Shampoo Powder to be super lightweight and mattifying – soaking up any excessive oil to leave my hair feeling refreshed; not heavy.

Finally, I wanted to find a Dry Shampoo that was as natural as can be - in a continued effort to move away from petroleum, aerosol-like products which leave me coughing and spluttering.

Talc-free, paraben-free, sls-free and organic; it's clear these values are just as important to Corinne in her products, as they are to me hunting them down. It's not left my travel bag since...

ERASE THE DAY // Meraki Make Up Wipes

May & June were full on; lots of tv and event work meant the days were long, the travel was constant and the skincare routine was out of the window.
Hotels and hefty glasses of wine post-working day had me collapsing into bed as soon as we called ‘cut’. And at the end of it all.. my skin was what took the brunt of the exhaustion due to my sheer laziness.

I was craving something quick, travel-friendly and cleansing for the end of the day.

To my delight it was an organic discovery whilst bumbling around on a Saturday morning that I encountered Meraki at Abode Living in the North Laine.

Danish brand - Meraki - strive for products creatively inspired by clean the Scandinavian aesthetic as well as the natural environment and it was exactly in that order that I was drawn to their products.

It is during this particular busy period, where time has not been of the essence, Meraki Make Up Removal Wipes have done just the trick. SLS, Colourant & Paraben Free, they remove all traces of the day without the need to scrub at my skin or pick at my eyelashes. Leaving nothing but a softening, fresh, cucumber-y scent (due to the Aloe Vera Extract).

My next aim is to balance travel alongside some proper dedication to the 'cleanse and tone' bedtime routine my skin so justly deserves.

HURRAY for Hurraw! // Coconut Scented Lip Balm - Hurraw!

It takes a lot to find someone who is:

1. As obsessed with lip balm as I am.
2. Is as specific with lip balm as I can be.

Enter, Hurraw!

Their criteria matches mine entirely in what I’m looking for when sourcing the perfect soothing balm: A smooth, long lasting balm that’s non-draggy, non-grainy, not too sticky, glossy or scented and could hold up to the task without melting in your back pocket.

Not content with creating the raddest, purest product around - their lip balm is geniusly oval shaped for a perfect glide on application - and their commitment to creating a product that is environmentally conscious and ethically balanced, through organic and fairly traded sourcing is to be celebrated.

Their helpful downloadable PDF - giving a detailed descriptive list of ingredients - shows a refreshing transparency that for me, is not only impressive but stands them out from the crowd.

PEARLY WHITES // Green Tea & Mint, Urtekram Toothpaste

I've tried other types of alternative toothpastes before with little success. Chalky, crunchy & soapy are not exactly the adjectives I want to describing whilst brushing my pearly whites – and that had been my exact experience so far.

So I was relieved to find in INFINITY FOODS  a simply designed bottle of toothpaste from Danish-based brand URTEKRAM. Promoting itself as vegan, fluoride-free and organic.

I opted for the mint based flavouring, to ease me in gently. The Green Tea within it is supposed to have a positive effect on teeth & gums due to the naturally occurring polyphenols.

At £2.85 / 75ml I'd say its reasonably priced in comparison to some of the big brands and using it feels no different either. One comment might be that it's doesn't foam as much as big brand products, but I'd experienced that with other 'sensitive' toothpastes & my teeth definitely feel clean, bright and polished.
