SILVER LINING // LUSH Silver Pigment Eyeliner in Success

OK Guys!

First post of 2017

So let’s kick it off with some experimental Spring 2017 Trends shall we?

This week I’m bringing you one of three playful
eye makeup looks that slot nicely into this emerging scene of minimal, barely there makeup - which seems to be a buck from the currently slightly over-egged Instagram trend of contouring.

I've also noticed - much to my delight - there's a lot of glitter around at the moment, as well as a laid back metallic edge to the traditional smudgy, smokey eye.

Now I'm fully aware that I have the luxury of living in downright wacky Brighton; where no one batters an eyelid if you’ve decided to team a jumper with holes in against sequin disco flares you picked up from the back of your mum's wardrobe to wear to work that day…

But despite that, I know it can be scary to go for something a bit different and experimental, so hopefully these little twists on something a little bolder, will give you that nudge to try something different with your everyday - & to be a little bit more playful!

All three looks feature Success by LUSH - a pigmented sleek silver, bottled in the shape of an eyeliner. Of course LUSH is cruelty free, and this particular shade is vegan.
It can be smudged or left precise.

How?
Think: Rainbow Arches
Keep your eyelids clean & your eyebrows sharp
I kept it natural, but add a little mascara if you fancy

A* FOR AXIOLOGY // Vegan Lipstick

Let me introduce to you one of the fanciest and snazziest designed lipsticks that I have come across to date; Axiology.

Before we’ve even come to unfurl the deep-rust red lipstick, we have the exterior packaging to contend with. In all it’s unusual triangular glory, complete with an embossed modern branding.

A rough textured paper alludes straight away to the idea that it’s probably from a recycled source (nothing new there). Until you hear that said recycled source has been hand collected from a woman’s-only enterprise, specialising in recycling all manner of paper materials from hotels and litter all across the island of Bali, by means of tackling the environmental impact litter has on the island.

Wow.

And then there’s the capsule - a simple yet beautiful - golden matte, metal case, which reveals its contents not by swiveling the lipstick in the traditional sense - no, no, no, - but instead by pushing the bottom of the lipstick to release the interior.
A design delight!

I picked this Autumnal Orangey Red - in Elusive) - as a perfect pair to golden adornments for the festive period.

Initially I mistook it for a matte-finish lipstick - just a personal preference with darker shades - but it glided on with a subtle sheen thanks to the oodles of nourishment in their organic oils. Avocado Oil (pollutant protecting), Coconut Oil (antifungal) & Castor Seed Oil (moisturising) all enrich this lipstick to protect and nourish and there is a deep, wintery scent that lingers from the Orange Essential Oils within. On an application note; due to the sheer finish, reapplication and liner is needed to prevent bleeding!

This is a luxe product which is reflected in the price (£22.50) which I found from Naturismo, so you are really buying into Axiology’s ethos here, but I justified it as a Christmas present to myself..
with all that present shopping I’ve been doing for others..

NU DO // Cuttlefish Eco Salon

There's a little Olive Green Eco Salon at the end of the road where I live; always bustling with people leaving with colourful and creative dos, that has always intrigued me.

For the past 3 years I've been getting my hair coloured by a very talented friend of mine, and when you find a good hairdresser – you hang on to them! So I was slightly wary of an eco-salon.

Would it be good enough? If harsh chemicals are not being used, does this mean the colour isn't as strong or long lasting enough to produce cool ashy tones?

But I did feel a strange tug towards Brighton-based Cuttlefish Salon - it felt odd to continue to be sitting in the chair in standard salons knowingly allowing heavy loaded peroxides to bleach my locks. And upon rave reviews from my husband, Lewis – who's long, dark, curly hair seems to bring out the worst in hairdressers ideals – I decided to give it a whirl.

Full to the brim with products that are only cruelty free and organic, as well as using eco towels to keep their carbon footprint down, there's a paired back vibe to the interiors: a single piece of slate in the wall to hold your tea &/or the stylists tools. Customers with colours wait in a line of cinema chairs opposite a wall of interesting screen prints and where delightful magazines like Oh Comely is the choice over OK! – perfect.

When I sat down, Ashley completely read my mind for the cut and style I was after. She confidently hand painted the blonde into my hair and was kind enough to show me how to style my new fringe properly. I joked she was the anti-hairdresser... and I mean this in a good way. All the boring questions I felt I should ask (products, daily styling etc) in order to make conversation with hairdressers, she wasn't interested in entertaining, so it felt more like catching up with a mate for 3 hours - which suited me perfectly.

I left the salon feeling like she'd done her best, I'm enjoying getting to grips with my new face framing fringe – plus I feel I really got the balance right of trying something new, whilst also feeling like myself.

PERFECT PEEPERS // Volumising Mascara - GREEN PEOPLE

Last week I talked about my exploration into organic mascaras.. Having not yet made the transition across. And this week I’ve managed to get my mits onto the Volumising Mascara by fellow Sussex Locals, Green People.

Full of natural pigments and dowsed in Vitamin E, Sunflower Oil & Organic Beeswax, there is a big difference when applying this inky, sleek little number to my lashes first time.

Slick and not claggy, I was surprised to feel that my lashes seemed instantly nourished and full - rather than bogged down and flakey. Every comb allowed a silken coat; gliding on much smoother than what I am used to and the build up was very effective.

Non-messy or sticky, the wand holds more rigidity than a bushy, bristley wand - but I think this works in it’s favour for defining the lashes and coating them evenly.

I wasn’t expecting definition from a volumising mascara but I’ve been extremely impressed with the definition of my lashes on application - each individual lash seemingly more defined rather than just becoming more heavy upon loading. And they remained at their pre-application curled state so I didn’t need to re-curl to open the eyes up again.

There is an admirable simplicity in the packaging; a glossy black tube with exactly what it needs to say highlighted in a zero fuss font. Plus all the ingredients on the packet explained in a neat little box so you know exactly where you stand - and that is a luxe vegetarian, cruelty free, organic piece.
