MY NUDE OBSESSION // Green People's Damask Rose Velvet Matte Lipstick

I received this gorgeous shade Damask Rose recently from Green People & it literally couldn't come at a better time.

I was coming to the end of my favourite everyday wear, Kinda Sexy by Mac, knowing that my love affair with Mac had truly run its course and wondering how on earth I was going to find a suitable organic, clean replacement for it.

I really loved Kinda Sexy because it seemed to be a universal suit, mousey brown or blonde hair, it still worked. I'd also compliment my girlfriends on their lippy on nights out - only to find out later as we were all wearing the same shade!

Sp, thankfully Green People's Velvet Matte Lipstick is exactly the same - only better!
Damask Rose is a rosey-nude tone complete with animal friendly colourings and a completely matte without caking, drying or cracking.

There are NO petrochemicals, synthetics or preservities in this nourishing lipstick full of Vit E, Beeswax & Carnuba Wax.

It feels super velvety and soft to wear, it stays put & it doesn't dry your lips out.

I love it when a brand delivers on what it says it's product can do. There's nothing more annoying then purchasing a product that says it's matte, and its not, says it's highly pigmented and doesn't last or says its organic and isn't true to form.

Damask Rose, is thankfully, not one of those tales.

I would sooo recommend the replacement to switch from a "dirty" unethical brand like Mac to Green People's Damask Rose if you're in love with nude-rose shades at the moment, which are so easy to wear.

This lipstick truly delivers.

REBEL REBEL // A Second Hand Story

Why Vintage?

Vintage, Second Hand, Thrift Store, Charity Shop, Hand-me-downs.
Whatever you title your pre-loved clothes; vintage shopping promotes a cleaner environment by being mindful about waste & recycling as you're not adding to landfills.

Plus, it's fun.

Whether its hunting down the perfect item to see if it'll fit as nicely as it sits on the hanger or having a laugh because it looks utterly ridiculous once you've tried it on; everyone knows there's a certain thrill in finding something completely unique that no one else can get their mits on.

Today's Story:

My usual take is that an item of clothing is that it makes more sense to purchase if it's viable for multiple occasions. So there's two approaches to this dress; formal & informal.

I first wore it when singing at a wedding with nude sky-high heels & bright red lips, but today I threw it on with my vintage denim over coat, messy mane and my favourite paint splattered vans.

I always tell my pals I feel like my style goes to about 80% polished.. & then I hold back a little bit of scruff.

Hence, the vans.

WINTER SKIN RESCUE // AS Apothecary

A couple of weeks back on a really frosty Winter’s Night I was invited to the AS Apothecary shop opening in Lewes, Sussex.

I had been admiring AS Apothecary lovingly from afar for some time now, but turns out we had a mutual friend! So it was a pleasure to be there in person to introduce myself - mostly by basically fangirling over Amanda’s encyclopedic knowledge of plants and herbal remedies for all sorts of ailments.
..Infact, I was so
caught up in conversation that I was definitely, embarrassingly the last person to leave the gorgeous shop that night!

I left with a couple of goodies, which I’m featuring this week as my Winter Skin Rescue secret formula. Both are oil based, rich in nutrients and filled to the brim with nothing but goodness!

I’m personally a bit freaked out by oils on the face; mostly down to my fine hair which deems itself greasy within breathing distance of any oil residue. So I’ve kept the Facial Serum & Cleansing Oil to an end of day routine, and with all these Christmas Do’s this time of year, the make up has been heavy on the eyes and the nights have been late!

Nothing is too much of a match for this beautiful Cleansing Oil - it’s a joy to squeeze out from the pipette into my palm like science labcoat technician - but it is a very odd feeling rubbing a waterproof oil into my face to reveal nothing but a charcoal smear from my eyes to my chin.

There’s a slight panic on first use as I catch myself in the mirror - it forms a sort of barrier as it lifts the make up - & I’m thinking there’s no way this will all come off without residue. But it’s the exact opposite to my expectations - every, last, scrap of makeup comes off when combined with a steaming hot face cloth, and absolutely no residue is left on the face. There’s no dry-ness, itching or stinging - the end result is a soft, clean skin which feels nourished and bouncy.

The Facial Serum, Amanda proceeds to tell me, is full of some of their best and finest ingredients. From Rosehip Oil to Jojoba Oil - a free radical preventative, rich in antioxidants and full of Vitamin E for gorgeous clear skin. It’s intensely rich, smells divine and is best left to settle into the skin as an overnight serum.

AS Apothecary is unashamedly transparent about their slow, meditative process and approach to gathering by hand by respecting wildlife that's the intrinsic core to their making process. They use small batch methods, recycle and reduce waste where possible, use local and organic produce from East Sussex and even grow their wildflower ingredients themselves.

MIRACLE MELT // Evolve Organic Beauty's Gentle Cleansing Melt

Where do I start? Evolve, for me, literally ticks all the boxes.
Based in Hertfordshire, I'm all about supporting a local British brand – especially when all Evolve's products are vegan and cruelty free.

I've tried all three of the cleansers in their collection, with my highest recommendation being the Baobab & Vanilla Gentle Cleansing Melt. It emulsifies on application with water; literally melting away eye make up with no stinging to the eyes or heavy balmy residue left on the skin. It's semi-transparent, gooey mixture smells of sweet vanilla goodness - without being sickly or overpowering.

I've been doubling-up my cleanse by following it with the fruity, apricot scent of their Fresh Face Wash; a light foaming gel which is moisturising to the skin, non-stinging to the eye and holds a scent that quickly had me reminiscing childhood summer days on the beach. If you're into toners, the Liquid Crystal 2-in-1 Micellar Cleanser, with a stunning rosewater scent and non-oily consistency, works for a quick once over on a cotton pad.

Visually - it's exactly what I want to see from a skincare company; brown protective glass to shelter their all natural, organic ingredients from potentially damaging UV rays. A clear font with all the information you need, summarised on the matte-waterproof labelling (handy!) including non-waffle-y directions on how to use, as well as a personal nod to their hand-crafted ethos with the maker labelled directly on the product – love!

With their hand-crafted, small-batch methods using solely organic ingredients it feels like Evolve are taking the time to deliver a considered and more refined product - bucking the norm of harmful “filler ingredients” to deliver a gorgeous product with an equally stunning ethos.

NU DO // Cuttlefish Eco Salon

There's a little Olive Green Eco Salon at the end of the road where I live; always bustling with people leaving with colourful and creative dos, that has always intrigued me.

For the past 3 years I've been getting my hair coloured by a very talented friend of mine, and when you find a good hairdresser – you hang on to them! So I was slightly wary of an eco-salon.

Would it be good enough? If harsh chemicals are not being used, does this mean the colour isn't as strong or long lasting enough to produce cool ashy tones?

But I did feel a strange tug towards Brighton-based Cuttlefish Salon - it felt odd to continue to be sitting in the chair in standard salons knowingly allowing heavy loaded peroxides to bleach my locks. And upon rave reviews from my husband, Lewis – who's long, dark, curly hair seems to bring out the worst in hairdressers ideals – I decided to give it a whirl.

Full to the brim with products that are only cruelty free and organic, as well as using eco towels to keep their carbon footprint down, there's a paired back vibe to the interiors: a single piece of slate in the wall to hold your tea &/or the stylists tools. Customers with colours wait in a line of cinema chairs opposite a wall of interesting screen prints and where delightful magazines like Oh Comely is the choice over OK! – perfect.

When I sat down, Ashley completely read my mind for the cut and style I was after. She confidently hand painted the blonde into my hair and was kind enough to show me how to style my new fringe properly. I joked she was the anti-hairdresser... and I mean this in a good way. All the boring questions I felt I should ask (products, daily styling etc) in order to make conversation with hairdressers, she wasn't interested in entertaining, so it felt more like catching up with a mate for 3 hours - which suited me perfectly.

I left the salon feeling like she'd done her best, I'm enjoying getting to grips with my new face framing fringe – plus I feel I really got the balance right of trying something new, whilst also feeling like myself.

TALC-FREE TRESSES // Organic Dry Shampoo Powder by Corinne Taylor

There is a new essential to add to my ever increasing box of magic tricks in the beauty cabinet and that is an Organic Dry Shampoo Powder from Corinne Taylor.

Handmade in Brighton, I was happy to support a local via this particular Dry Shampoo; but it needed to be hassle free & tick all the boxes before I invested in it as a regular.

So, what was on my 'no fuss' list for this Dry Shampoo to stand up to the task?

Well, it had to smell delicious - which it does; a zesty, lemony freshness that comes from the Organic Grapefruit essential oil within it. There's also a summery background scent, which smells like an English Rose Garden – very feminine and takes it up a notch from feeling like an everyday item to feeling a little more luxe.

Secondly, it was also important that it didn't clump or clog up in a white, grainy texture on the scalp once applied to my hair. And I found this Organic Dry Shampoo Powder to be super lightweight and mattifying – soaking up any excessive oil to leave my hair feeling refreshed; not heavy.

Finally, I wanted to find a Dry Shampoo that was as natural as can be - in a continued effort to move away from petroleum, aerosol-like products which leave me coughing and spluttering.

Talc-free, paraben-free, sls-free and organic; it's clear these values are just as important to Corinne in her products, as they are to me hunting them down. It's not left my travel bag since...

SILLY BILLY // 3 Free Nail Lacquer, Butter London

Spring is here and I’m willing the sun in with a nail colour that is bright and fun after a dreary Winter that never truly got going.

Long lasting and free from some of the harshest chemicals nail polishes usually contain, Butter London also use fun, British 'isms' to name each of their colours - & I’m looking forward to building up a little collection of each shade!

PEARLY WHITES // Green Tea & Mint, Urtekram Toothpaste

I've tried other types of alternative toothpastes before with little success. Chalky, crunchy & soapy are not exactly the adjectives I want to describing whilst brushing my pearly whites – and that had been my exact experience so far.

So I was relieved to find in INFINITY FOODS  a simply designed bottle of toothpaste from Danish-based brand URTEKRAM. Promoting itself as vegan, fluoride-free and organic.

I opted for the mint based flavouring, to ease me in gently. The Green Tea within it is supposed to have a positive effect on teeth & gums due to the naturally occurring polyphenols.

At £2.85 / 75ml I'd say its reasonably priced in comparison to some of the big brands and using it feels no different either. One comment might be that it's doesn't foam as much as big brand products, but I'd experienced that with other 'sensitive' toothpastes & my teeth definitely feel clean, bright and polished.

SEEING STARS // Celestial Face Moisteriser - LUSH Cosmetics

Creamy, dreamy, vanilla cupcake scented goodness.
My current favourite daily moisturiser that I can't do without.

Instant hydration that lasts all day, with a non-grainy texture that sits perfectly underneath makeup without causing it to slide off my face.

I spent a long
time trialling and testing the right everyday facial moisturiser - prone to having more dry skin over oily breakouts, my skin thirsts for all-day hydration that sinks in without feeling too heavy or sitting on my skin like an oil.

For me, this is the Goldilocks of facial moisturisers: not too thick, not too thin, enhanced with a little luxury from its beautiful, sweet vanilla-ry scent.
Just right.

HONEST HANDS // Bergamot & Rosemary Handwash, HONEST Skincare

I’m a mega fan of Katie’s. With a background in holistic apothecary she’s translated her knowledge of nature’s healing potentials into one of the most stylish and beautifully designed skincare brands out there.

For me it ticks all the boxes; Honest prioritises using the very best in pure ingredients that are safe to use on the body as well as being environmentally aware, through packaging that is recyclable with minimal waste in the studio.

Using the Bergamot & Rosemary Hand Wash leaves no residue - only a clean, balancing feel that doesn't dry my skin out. I chose the Bergamot & Rosemary fragrance from Workshop for it’s warmth and familiarity during the chilly Winter months. Plus its classic glass brown bottle container means I can keep the bottle to re-use for the future.

COMING UP ROSES // Rose & Patchouli Hand & Body Lotion - The Aromatherapy Co.

This was a Christmas present from my thoughtful Mother-in-Law who specifically sought something out for me that was safe and free from nasty chemicals.

I’d never heard of The Aromatherapy Co. before then but what I like about them is their honesty in their values and aims towards becoming a more environmentally sustainable company.

Using only the finest essential oils and not synthetics in this lotion for a starter, as well staying away from other synthetic ingredients.

As a product to wear, the lotion spreads thickly - almost like a liquid balm - and is equally as restorative and refreshing. The floral scent is not too heavy and as a lotion is easy for the skin to drink in quickly.
